Joy Stealer and Glory Giver

If you’re wondering if glass breaks when dropped on concrete, it does. I witnessed it first hand tonight. It was supposed to be a nice night all inclusive of a walk to the park, dinner, and sweet time communing with my Father. The walk got started later than planned, there were interruptions, and as my glass dinner bowl began the slide to the ground my fingers also had a late start rescuing the bowl.

I began to pick up the broken pieces and then decided I should go retrieve a broom from my house since the wreckage was in a park where children frequently run barefoot. The pity party ensued almost immediately. As I walked back to my house, my eyes teared and I began to question my Father as to why this had to happen of all nights on one I had set apart as special with Him. Minutes into my return home, I passed under a budding tree with spring blooms serving as a canopy over my head and fallen blooms carpeting the walk beneath me. A quiet whispering of the word ‘glory’ was the only appropriate response. I grabbed a handful of the fallen blooms as physical evidence of the glory, the hope.
My mind returned to the broken glass and then journeyed back to a year earlier at a cabin. I have an Easter tradition where I spend every Easter weekend at a cabin in solitude resting and listening and enjoying time away with my Father while remembering the death and resurrection. Last year was no different and the weekend had been magnificent until the cabin was invaded by an unwelcome intruder. I had propped the balcony door open to allow in natural air and accidentally let in a bird as well. Those who know me realize that I do not have a great affinity for birds. I did the only natural thing a person would do in that situation,I freaked out and called my dad. My dad instructed me to do the obvious thing and take a broom and assist the bird back outside.  After many fruitless attempts to shoo and/or pray the bird out and one or two adult-sized temper tantrums, I did the irrational thing and packed my bags leaving early.
I was thinking about these two incidents tonight and asked God why He lets these joy-stealers happen on the times set aside as special and sacred to be with Him. He gently reminded me that He is not the joy-stealer, that title belongs to our enemy. I then looked up at the sky and saw two stars peeking through the clouds, more glory. Yes, He is not the joy stealer but rather the glory giver. My tears dried up immediately at this new thought and my joy slowly began to return.

After returning to the park to clean up the broken glass, I went on to another park, my favorite park at night. I laid down on a park bench and stared up at the sky for a while. There were clouds in the sky in constant motion. As I watched the clouds roll by, every so often I would see a star peeking out. I watched the clouds roll over the face of the moon as well. At times I could see no moonlight. After a few seconds I would see a hazy moon followed by no light and then the whole section of sky would light up as the moon became unhidden.

I began to think about my relationship with God. At times it’s hard to see Him because my circumstances are cloudy and block my vision. At times I get little snippets of His glory as I did tonight. Then there are those times where I see His brightness radiating right before my eyes. Clouds may come and go, circumstances may come and go, dishes will break, plans will be interrupted, stuff will invade my life but the moon, God, they are constant. Every night, the moon will be in the sky whether I can see it, whether I look for it, it will be there. Likewise, God is present when I can’t see Him, when I’m not looking for Him. He is just as present daily as those times I actually stare into His glorious face. He is the glory giver, the joy giver, the life giver.
The night ended well. I remember thinking as I lay in the silence, eyes wide open to glory, ‘This is good. Yes, this night definitely turned out good.’

Eager Expectation

I remember as child getting ridiculously excited and probably a little crazy around Christmas in anticipation of Christmas morning and what goodies and gifts it would bring.  Christmas Eve felt like it lasted a week. One year in particular I remember waking up at 4:44 in the morning, tiptoeing into my parents room and asking if we could open presents. Needless to say, they sent me back to bed.

I find as an adult that this attitude of eager expectation has disappeared somewhere between piles of laundry, work, and lack of sleep. During this season of Lent, I have intentionally scheduled a daily break from the noise to be in the Presence of God and to hopefully catch His voice speaking into my life. On Sunday morning, the voice came quietly but nonetheless clearly:
‘You do not have enough expectation in your life.’
I don’t know the specifics of what I am to be expecting and yet my heart understood. I tend to be a skeptic, a cynic, a realist focusing on facts and details rather than dreaming wild, crazy things and then waiting in childlike expectation and even pestering until those things to come to fruition.
I went about the rest of my day with the word ‘expectation’ simmering in my soul. My day ended busy, noisy and I was weary, spent, exhausted and a little heart sick from it all. When I awoke the next morning, I was still feeling a little weary but I sought out some truth in the early morning and was not disappointed. The words totally reiterated the words from the day before:
“Waiting on Me means directing your attention to Me in hopeful anticipation of what I will do. It entails trusting Me with every fiber of your being, instead of trying to figure things out yourself. Waiting on Me is the way I designed you to live: all day, every day. I created you to stay conscious of Me as you go about your daily duties.” -Sarah Young Jesus Calling p.89
“‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’ The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” -Lamentations 3:24-26
I looked up the Hebrew words for ‘wait’ in these verses and amazingly here are the synonyms: to expect, look for, wait upon, wait quietly.
I was thinking yesterday about some recent conversations where God answered prayers quickly in my life or my friend’s life. It is always quite shocking in my life when He actually says yes to my requests. Why is this abnormal? Why not expect the miracle? I’m not saying that I should be able to ‘name it and claim it’ on wishes in my life as if God were some genie sent to do my bidding. What I am saying is that He is a God who delights in making Himself look glorious and as Ephesians says He lavishes us with the riches of His grace. There are so many times where I miss recognizing His blessing, His voice, His Presence because I am too busy, too distracted, too entertained, or just not keeping a watchful eye. For now, I have my eyes wide opening ready to see what the next few months will bring. I’m not quite to the place of Christmas morning childlike giddiness but hopefully I will get there.

“Give me not weak desires but the power of his presence,”
“Save me... from being content with a little measure of the Spirit... content with a little light.” -The Valley of Vision ‘GOD THE SPIRIT’ p.29
“There is a coward sparing in the heart,
Offspring of penury and low-born fear:--
Prayer must take heed nor overdo its part,
Asking too much of him with open ear!
Sinners must wait, not seek the very best,
Cry out for peace, and be of middling cheer:--
False heart! thou cheatest God, and doest they life molest.”
“I clasp thy feet, O father of the living!
Thou wilt not let my fluttering hopes be more,
Or lovelier, or greater, than thy giving!
Surely thy ships will bring to my poor shore,
Of gold and peacocks such a shining store
As will laugh all the dreams to holy scorn,
Of love and sorrow that were ever born.”

Enjoy the Moment

I was already antsy, having a hard time focusing. I bent my head and stared at the pattern of the wood flooring so I could direct my thoughts to listen rather than letting my mind wander. My week had been overly busy and being an introvert, I had pretty much reached my people capacity for the month. After what seemed like an hour of share time, my small group had finally reached the time to pray. I went first and by the time we were halfway around the circle, I was bouncing my knee, juggling between listening by concentrating on a spot on the wood floor and thinking about the plethora of things I needed to do when I got home and over the next week. The frustration in me silently breathed, ‘Why does this have to take so long?’ The reply was quick:
“Breathe in this moment.”
“Rest in this moment.”
“Enjoy the moment.”
I took a few deep breaths and decided to obey the voice. Of course I should enjoy the moment. I am in the midst of prayer, communion with the Most Holy Being in the Universe. Why am I trying to rush through this? As the band Alabama sings:
I’m in a hurry to get things done
Oh I rush and rush until life’s no fun
All I really gotta do is live and die
But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why

I was reminded of the story, ‘The Golden Thread’. The boy was given a silver ball with a golden thread. When things got boring or he grew impatient, all he had to do was tug the golden thread and an hour would seem like only a second had passed and he would be free from the drudgery of school. If he gave it a harder tug, years would fly by in a moment. He pulls and tugs on the thread speeding his life along until he reaches the end and realizes if he tugs again, he will die. He begins to look back at his life and has many regrets. In the end the old woman who had originally given him the golden thread gives him the choice to go back and do his life over without the thread. He does so happily.
The moral of the story, and the lesson I was reminded of the other day at my small group, is to ‘Enjoy the moment’. May I find the greener grasses of being patient, breathing deep into the breaths I have been given, giving thanks for those breaths, and enjoying all my moments rather than trying to rush my life away.

A Study of Light and a Lenten Prayer

For Lent this year, I decided to go on a journey of indulging in special time with my Father, seeking the fullness of His Presence and seeking out light in all its forms through scripture, other readings and everyday life.

Light, illumination, luminary, happiness, bright, clear day, morning, sun, glitter, shimmer, gold, a clear sky, fair weather, golden splendor. With descriptions like that, who doesn’t want more light in their life? Below are some verses, quotes, and thoughts that have been meaningful to me thus far in my journey.

“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. -Genesis 1:3
“Father, You are calling for us, calling us out of hiding ... and we come out of the shadows. And into Your presence.” -Ann Voskamp Trail to the Cross
“He bowed the heavens and came down;” -2 Samuel 22:10
“Thou hast died for me, may I live for thee, ... in every pulse of my heart.”
-The Valley of Vision ‘CHRIST IS ALL’ p.18

“...enjoy his fullness ... that when I do this I am full of the Spirit, as a fish that has got from the shore to the sea and has all fullness of waters to move in.” -The Valley of Vision ‘FULLNESS IN CHRIST’ p.19
“In him the unholy find renovation” -The Valley of Vision ‘THE NAME OF JESUS’ p.21
“Beautiful are the words spoken to me, beautiful is the One who is speaking.  Come in close, come in close and speak, come in close, come closer to me” -Charlie Hall
“...that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD” -Psalm 27:4

“Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him.” -Psalm 37:6

“His face is brighter than a thousand suns! - The Son breaks out in glory when he shows himself as one who outshines all creation” -The Valley of Vision ‘LOVE TO JESUS’ p.26
“How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights.  For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.” -Psalm 36:7-9

“Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling! Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy, and I will praise you...” - Psalm 43:3-4

I end with the following Lenten prayer which embodies so much of my heart and desires during this time:

O HOLY SPIRIT
As the sun is full of light, the ocean full of water,
     Heaven full of glory, so may my heart be full of thee.
Vain are all divine purposes of love
        and the redemption wrought by Jesus
        except thou work within,
               regenerating by thy power,
               giving me eyes to see Jesus,
               showing me the realities of the unseen world.
Give me thyself without measure,
        as an unimpaired fountain,
        as inexhaustible riches.
I bewail my coldness, poverty, emptiness,
                imperfect vision, languid service,
                prayerless prayers, praiseless praises.
Suffer me not to grieve or resist thee.
Come as power,
        to expel every rebel lust, to reign supreme and keep me
         thine;
Come as teacher,
        leading me into all truth, filling me with all
         understanding;
Come as love,
        that I may adore the Father, and love him as my all;
Come as joy,
        to dwell in me, move in me, animate me;
Come as light,
        illuminating the Scripture, moulding me in its laws;
Come as sanctifier,
        body, soul and spirit wholly thine;
Come as helper,
        with strength to bless and keep, directing my every
         step;
Come as beautifier,
        bringing order out of confusion, loveliness out of chaos.
Magnify to me thy glory by being magnified in me,
        and make me redolent of they fragrance.
-The Valley of Vision ‘SPIRITUS SANCTUS’ p.28
