"Run Like a Scalded Dog" and other Dad Quotes

Last year, I started a note in my phone called, “Run like a scalded dog.” I spent the summer in the States with my family and it had been the longest stretch of living with them since high school. I began to notice how often my dad threw random statements into every day conversation. The first of many was, “Run like a scalded dog.” I have been greatly entertained by these “Dad Quotes” and thought I would share them here.

      bushel basket.”

Naked and Exposed

I decided to do a quick read through Hebrews. In reality, a quick read through Hebrews is not possible. Several years ago, a quick read through the book resulted in me spending close to a year there. As I read this book, I find verses and passages that require some deeper, longer meditating.

In Hebrews 4, we find this:

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are NAKED and EXPOSED to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

That is pretty terrifying imagery. Our thoughts and even intentions are laid bare to him. We cannot hide from him. We are naked and exposed to him. It is to him that we must give account.

It reminds me of Adam and Eve in the garden. Pre-sin they were naked and unashamed. Post-sin, they were attempting to cover their nakedness and shame. They wanted to hide from the One to whom they would give an account.

The reason I have been stuck in this chapter of Hebrews, for the past few days, is what comes next.

“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

After reading that God discerns my thoughts and intentions, that I can’t hide from him, and that I am naked and exposed to him, I expected to read that I am hopelessly doomed to destruction. Instead, I read of an invitation. Precisely when I am naked and exposed, precisely when I feel the depths of my sin and shame, I should draw near to him and find mercy and grace.

This is the good news. Rather than my exposed nakedness resulting in justly deserved destruction, I find grace and mercy instead. Thanks be to Christ who tore the veil and who covers our naked shame.
